UFC 165: Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson – MMA News
This past Sat., Sept. 21, 2013 UFC 165: “Jones vs. Gustafsson” blew the roof off the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada featuring a main event of Jon Jones successfully defending his light heavyweight title over Alexander Gustafsson in the very definition of an instantaneous classic.
In the first round, Jones looked like he won’t touch gloves, but he finally did at the last second before they headed back to their corners. Both of them threw long strikes at each other. Two, three oblique kicks in a row from Jon. Jones pushed off Gus’s face and poked Gus in his right eye. Left from Gus lands and Jones has a cut. The score at the end of the first round was 10-9 Jones.
Coming to the second round, Jones got that eye worked over in between rounds. Leg kicks from Gus, and big leg kicks from Jon that stumble Gus. Jones went for the pro wrestling rolling kick, missed, but scrambled into a takedown that he again could not complete. The score at the end of the first round was 10-9 Jones.
Round three, was much better for Gus, a lot better than anyone would have thought especially in Boxing. Gus catches Jon’s kick again but could not get him down. It’s now 1-2 from Gus. Spinning elbow from Jones that Gus mostly ducked and he tried to turn into a takedown.
In the round four, high kicks were blocked by both of the players. Gus evaded the clinch takedown again. At the end of the round, Gus was hurt and Jones swarmed. Gus continued standing, but he was bleeding badly. Flying knee and Gus showed a warrior’s heart. Despite of losing most of the round, it was 10-9 Jones for the end.
With the starting of round five, Gus landed a punch. Got a right hand in and he looked recovered. Gus stuffed a takedown and tried a spinning elbow of his own. Jones looked extremely tired. With 30 seconds remaining, it was hell of a fight at the end of round five. It was 10-9 Jones for a 48-47 on the card.
